Mecklenburg County Revaluation

Every 4 to 8 years, Mecklenburg County takes on the enormous task of the revaluation of some 360,000 individual parcels of property to correct the "fair market value" estimates used to determine their tax value. January 1, 2023 is the effective date of the new valuation and represents the first such revaluation since 2019.

When you receive your Notice of Real Property Assessed Value in the mail in late January 2023, you may find that your new valuation by Mecklenburg County is higher than you think it should be. If you do disagree with the value on your Notice, Mecklenburg County and NC State Law provides property owners an appeals process to dispute a county tax assessor's valuation of a property.

Property owners have 30 days from the receipt of the Notice to notify the County in writing of your desire to appeal. The Mecklenburg County Property Record Card Search website has a "File an Informal Appeal" button right on the web page to allow you to notify the County that you wish to appeal your new tax value. You do not have to have an appraisal in hand at the time of your request for an appeal but you may need one for the informal review or hearing by the Board of Adjustment that may occur a few months later.
